Power switch

At THE SNP conference, Alex Salmond told delegates: “We now know that oil and gas will last for the next 50 years and there is also tidal power, wave power and wind power and years and years of coal reserves so it is imperative that we gain control of it.” He wanted a low-carbon economy and 100 per cent from renewables by 2020 to the detriment of fossil fuels such as gas, oil and coal. He now wants to use gas and oil and coal. Confused? I am. With all this energy why continue with expensive, useless, subsidised wind turbines?

Scotland has 2,600MW capacity of wind turbines and England and Wales has 1,250MW capacity operational. The subsidies paid to developers are included in our energy bills.

Come independence, who is going to pay for these subsidies for Scottish wind farms that are presently partly paid by consumers in England and Wales? There is growing speculation that the government is on the verge of cutting the multi-billion-pound financial incentives for onshore wind farms and solar panels on houses. Hope it happens.
