Post-independence, unionists should go

Ever since the May election and the SNP’s landslide victory, or undesigned majority, there has been a lot of debate on the advantages and disadvantages of both the union and independence.

I state now that in my own view the independence argument is winning hands down, mainly because of the positive way it is presented, whereas most of the union arguments are extremely negative.

One scenario, however, seems to have been overlooked. When the SNP finally holds the fabled referendum and if the answer is a resounding Yes or enough of a Yes to take Scotland forward to negotiating an agreement for independence, what, post-independence, is the position of the unionist parties?

The unionist parties are forever crying out for the SNP to say what its plans are for an independent Scotland.

Surely if the referendum outcome is a Yes then the negotiation with the UK government would be an all-party exercise and the real question is, what are the unionist plans for an independent Scotland?

If Scotland were to become independent would there be an election to form a new Scottish Parliament, as we could expect the SNP to dissolve, as its reasons for existing would be achieved?

It would be extremely hypocritical for the personnel who make up the present unionist parties to stand for re-election, considering their constant negativity about Scotland. The Secretary of State for (or is it against?) Scotland springs to mind.

Are all those so-called hard hitters in the Labour Party at Westminster going to stand for re-election?

They will have to completely re-assess themselves and come up with completely new candidates who will have the welfare of the people living in Scotland in their hearts and not their own welfare.

We will need truly committed people to take Scotland through the first years of independence, to set an example and hopefully a high standard for subsequent governments to live up to.

The “Mother of all Parliaments” has become a disgrace.

On Wednesday David Cameron described as “stupid” a recent poll showing that 68 per cent of Scots wished to devolve oil revenues in Scottish waters to Scotland and then continued to smirk along with the other unionist parties.

This shows utter arrogance towards the Scottish SNP MPs and the Scottish people, many of whom lost loved ones for the sake of freedom and democracy. We are being held in contempt and are now ashamed to be British.

This is despicable behaviour by someone who should know better.
