Poor show

It is interesting as a sign of the times that neither Martin Sime of the Scottish Council of Voluntary Organisations nor the Letters page of The Scotsman knows that we did not have work houses in Scotland but “poor houses”.

Twenty years ago George Rosie wrote of the cultural “Englishing of Scotland”. It seems that he was correct.
