Playing ball

Gordon Watson (Letters, 1
December) highlights the weakness in the whole process of bidding for the Fifa World Cup Finals.

It would be far better if the venue for the finals was determined with the help of the round ball itself, rather than by marketing and alleged bribery.

Those wishing to host the event would simply lodge a bid with details of the venues at which the football matches would be held.

The names of the countries whose facilities were acceptable would go into a hat and a knock out or league competition would be held to determine the winning bid.

The above method of determining the hosts would at least mean there would be no repeat of the fiasco in 1966 when the winner of the competition played just six games in their national stadium, and even then only managed to win four of these games in normal time.
