The Church of Scotland’s recent report highlighting that the cost of funerals is leaving many families under “huge strain” (your report, 29 April) is concerning.

Organising a funeral involves a great deal of emotional and mental strength and it’s important not to ignore the impact on people’s finances.

It was also recently reported that one in five families experienced a shortfall in paying for a funeral, thus bringing funeral poverty to £131 million in the UK.

Therefore, the opportunity to plan ahead and buy a pre-paid 
funeral plan should not be 
underestimated.

Doing so allows you to outline the arrangements you wish to make and for costs to be covered in advance.

Many funeral directors require a large deposit before the actual funeral has taken place, so taking control early on ensures that grieving family and friends won’t have to bear the responsibility.
