Regarding the war of Yes/No signs, you ask what J M Barrie, author of Peter Pan, might have made of it all (your report, 13 September).

His invention of a child that could flap its wings and fly unassisted proved a sad disappointment to me when, at a tender age, I leapt off my mother’s dressing table. Some may feel Barrie’s flight of fancy has a counterpart in the fertile imagination of at least one of the protagonists in the current debate.

Barrie wrote of a man: “Facts were never pleasing to him. He acquired them with reluctance and got rid of them with relief. He was never on terms with them until he had stood them on their heads.” Scottish voters may perhaps discern another who fits this very model.
