Persecution claim

Alistair McBay (Letters, 1
January) did not seem to have read my letter carefully before he replied.

I in no way suggested that the insulting and offensive attacks by some atheists on mainstream Christian views amounted to “persecution”.

What I did say was that such aggressive and intemperate language helps create a culture in which the mistreatment of Christians is more likely.

It is getting towards the stage where the actions of the politically correct thought police and the liberal inquisition in Britain might merit the description
“persecution”.

Mr McBay referred to Christians conducting a “campaign of vilification” and accused me of “dishing out insult and ridicule”.

Perhaps Mr McBay would like to quote the most insulting and abusive phrase he can find among my many letters available online.

Here’s one to start with: “All human beings are equally valuable, being created in God’s image. It does not follow from this, however, that there is no such thing as sexual morality.”

Does that sound like crazed hate speech to the National Secular Society?

When Mr McBay wrote that the Pope “thinks he can order the rest of us to live in the manner of a humble first century carpenter”, did he really think that he was presenting an accurate articulation of the Pope’s message, or was he merely ridiculing?
