Peat still burning

Many thanks for the report (13 January) indicating that I am standing down in April as director of the David Hume Institute (DHI). All publicity and resulting applications to take over the position will be welcomed!

However, I would like to correct any misapprehension that my future life will consist solely of putting my feet up by the fire. It is true that, in addition to the DHI, I am standing down in April from the Competition Commission – both after nine fascinating years. But I shall remain, inter alia, on the Scottish Enterprise board and hope to stay on for a while yet as chair of the RZSS – if the members so wish.

Certainly in this momentous year there is massive scope remaining for interesting work for an economist even at my (relatively) grand old age.
