Overreaction

Donald J Morrison (Letters, 3 December) is worried that the nuclear submarine reactors that are to be “dumped” in Scotland could lead to a “huge nuclear accident” which would result in the population of Scotland being “roasted alive”.

Please let me reassure Mr Morrison that despite both having the prefix “nuclear”, reactors and bombs are quite different things and that it is impossible for a reactor to produce a nuclear explosion – where matter is converted into energy.

As such, the probability of a nuclear reactor-related incident leading to the population of Scotland being “roasted alive” is precisely zero.
