Outdated action

I AM deeply concerned by the way Commander Sarah West has been publically humiliated by naval disciplinary procedures (your report, 9 August). As the first woman to captain a front-line warship in the navy’s 500-year history, she was hauled off her ship in a manner that must have pleased many reactionary old sea dogs.

The military’s antiquated codes of social conduct are enforced with variable severity and this matter should have been handled with greater sensitivity and a lot less masculine glee.
