On your bike

You quote Boris Johnson, mayor of London, as claiming that Londoners are losing 
patience over why they are denied similar fiscal freedoms to those given to devolved governments in Wales and Scotland (your ­report, 16 May).

One is inclined to ask if this is the same London whose underground network is currently being upgraded at a cost of £16 billion and which will soon enjoy the benefits of a cross-city railway network costing £6bn.

These sums make the cost of Edinburgh’s new tram network seem like an exercise in frugality.
