On nationalism

Richard Marsh (Letters, 6 June) suggested that a No vote in the referendum is a rejection of nationalism.

He is wrong. What a No vote really means is saying no to having a Scottish nationality.

He quoted George Orwell of 1984 fame, who wrote that “patriotism is devotion to a particular place and way of life which one believes to be the best in the world”.

The particular place in the referendum is Scotland. It would be very strange indeed if anyone who identifies with this description of Scottish patriotism could possibly vote No and reject having a Scottish nationality.
