Office politics

Alex Salmond’s personal declaration of Arbroath (your report, 20 August) comes as no surprise.

In June I said there was a high probability that he would be forced out of office no matter the outcome of 18 September.

He has obviously come to accept this himself but, in typical Salmond fashion, has turned this potentially
humiliating circumstance into a gesture of apparent magnanimous self-sacrifice.

Acceptance of defeat and a bit of face-saving talk will have to suffice.
