Now loch here!

Ashley Davies may have fixed her diet (Travel, Weekend Life, 23 May), but her sense of geography seems to have suffered. Ruined Caisteal Tioram (dry castle) is not on Loch Shiel, it’s on a tidal island in Loch Moidart, which being tidal is, of course, a sea loch. Loch Shiel is an 18-mile-long freshwater loch stretching from Glenfinnan south-west to Acharacle, flowing into Loch Moidart via the short River Shiel, whose estuary is near the castle. My parents’ ashes were scattered on Loch Moidart.

Facing the castle used to be Dorlin House, a mansion used by the Navy as a training centre during the Second World war, but demolished later. The foundations of huts in the adjacent “goose field” to the north are overgrown but still visible. The site now houses a luxury holiday let. Five other locations in the vicinity and the Ardamurchan peninsula were also used by the military during the war.
