Nothing to fear

Independence would put us at risk, reports The Scotsman
(16 June). Is this the risk of becoming like Switzerland, another small, Scotland-sized independent country in northern Europe?

Switzerland is not in the European Union, but despite having no oil, gas or coal, it has a GDP per head 25-50 per cent more than the UK and is among the richest countries in the world.

It is not in Nato, but despite being surrounded by the most warlike of nations it has not fought a war for 200 years and has done enormous good through the Red Cross.

But much more important, Switzerland qualified for the World Cup in Brazil and won their first match against Ecuador, three times their size!

Nothing to fear but everything to strive for.
