Not so funny

I AGREE with the comments of Alexander Stoddart, the Queen’s sculptor in Scotland, on what some people do to the statues in our cities (your report, 12 October). I felt sad when I read that someone had deliberately scraped the repair work off the nose of the statue of Greyfriars Bobby.

People have been placing traffic cones on the statue of the Duke of Wellington in Glasgow since the 1980s and pictures of this have been used in greeting cards and tourist publicity for the city as a demonstration of our irreverent sense of humour. But after a few decades, hasn’t the joke worn a bit thin?
