Not Baywatch

Andrew HN Gray (Letters, 12 May) misses the point dramatically by sounding bewildered about angry responses to the photograph of the women’s Olympic swimming team.

The original correspondent, Claire Kelly, was not angered by the photograph, which merely showed some athletes wearing their sport’s kit (that would be a little Victorian), but by the caption accompanying it, which included references to Baywatch.

I don’t wish to accuse Mr Gray of suffering from High Court judge syndrome, but perhaps he needs to understand that Baywatch was a programme featuring swimsuit-clad actresses who were playing lifeguards but were obviously cast because they were sexy and to titillate men.

Members of the UK women’s Olympic swimming team have different ambitions. If that’s not clear, perhaps he could ask a woman to talk him through it.
