No Scottish steel

How symptomatic and sad contracts for an iconic new Forth road bridge ignore the remaining steelworks in Lanarkshire and will have no Scottish steel element (your report, 3 February).

Scotland should regret that Robert Wiseman Dairies is being taken over by Müller, Ocean Terminal and the Quartermile in Edinburgh are being taken over by companies south of the Tweed and the long-awaited Edinburgh tram scheme relies on German and Spanish firms.

As a former Royal Bank of Scotland economist, First Minister Alex Salmond should know the political follows the economic. Scotland cannot afford to rely on windpower in politics. With one in five of the nation’s young people jobless, it is time for action where and when it really matters.
