No excuses

Yugo Kovach (Letters, 2 February) does well to point out the danger of demonising Iran, which appears to be the next prospective victim of aggressive Anglo-American foreign policy in the Middle East.

It is now generally agreed that the Hitler war could not have been avoided. As someone who narrowly survived this conflict, which involved terror bombing raids that created firestorms in Hamburg and Dresden, I learned that it was an evil thing to follow the example of Hitler in invading another country on the basis of fabricated evidence. Absolution can never be obtained by wearing a white shirt as a symbol of innocence and making encouraging visits to the troops risking their lives and honour in such operations.
