Nice Naughtie

I am going to miss the voice and attitude of James Naughtie on Radio 4’s Today programme (your report, 8 July).

I have always found his approach to be much more amenable than that of his colleague, John Humphrys, who is far too combative and irritates me with his constant interruptions.

It must be very difficult for producers editing quotes for re-use from people Mr Humphrys keeps talking over.

Mr Naughtie has always brought a more gentle and
cultured personality to the flagship programme and I am certain I won’t be the only listener – in Scotland or south of the Border – to miss him first thing in the morning.

But I am glad he will still be on the airwaves covering literature, something at which he already excels.
