New direction?

TEN years ago it would have been unthinkable, yet at the SNP spring conference in Inverness it became reality: a former Labour MP addressing SNP delegates and calling for Scotland’s independence – Dennis Canavan rallying the delegates in his capacity as chairman of the Yes campaign.

This begs the question: how many other former Labour members are out there looking for an opportunity to get back into mainline politics? Is the Yes campaign their opportunity to do so without the need to become involved with a political party?

How many former Labour Party members, feeling alone and unattached, hold on to sentiments aligned with the vision set out for Scotland by the Yes campaign – a left-of-centre fair society where decisions that affect Scotland are taken in Scotland?

I am sure the founding fathers of the Labour Party in Scotland would identify with those sentiments and this vision – a vision the party in Scotland no longer recognises.
