Natural order

Otto Inglis (Letters, 11 February) makes erroneous comparisons with humans when discussing the fate of Marius the giraffe, whose body was fed to the lions at Copenhagen Zoo.

Firstly, “Mother Nature” does not “practise” the eradication of young, healthy animals. This would put a species’ future at risk. Only humans interfere with natural laws.

Secondly, we do not euthanise the farm animals we eat – we slaughter them. There is no comparison with euthanasia, or “gentle death” and what happens in abattoirs.
