Nato query

According to weekend reports, the Deputy First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, is proposing that the constitution of an independent Scotland should commit to a permanent anti-nuclear weapons stance.

This is a perfectly legitimate party political point, although whether it should be a constitutional matter is something different.

It does, however, fly in the face of Angus Robertson’s gallant forcing through of the promise of Nato membership against opposition from many SNP members. Nato is a nuclear alliance. If we want to be members, then we cannot have an anti-nuclear constitution. Mr Robertson and Ms Sturgeon should, therefore, be honest with the electorate and say whether we are to be members of Nato (if Nato will have us) or not. At least we will know where we stand.
