Nanny state
Mark Boyle (Letters, 23 March) effectively denigrates the sound advice that was given during the run-up to the recent solar eclipse by categorising it as another example of interference by the “nanny state”.
The advice was laid out to ensure that everyone was aware of the risk of serious eye damage if the sun is viewed directly.
If he thinks that it should not have been given simply because he had the good fortune to observe the eclipse safely through light cloud, then I contend that we are in serious need of a nanny state.
I am astonished that you not only published Mr Boyle’s letter, but gave it unmerited prominence.
