Music mad

In her criticism of the recent Corrine Bailey Rae concert (review, 31 March), Fiona Shepherd reveals herself as that strangest of creatures, a music critic who seems to despise music.

Read any of her crits and you will be told about the costumes, what the lighting was like, or even, in one spectacular example, what Lenny Kravitz wore beneath his kilt.

All sorts of psycho analysis of lyrics is offered, but if any musician actually gives us a few bars of music without a singer, Ms Shepherd is in there with her standard "self-indulgent muso rambling" insult.

Of course, we are all entitled to our likes and dislikes, and if Ms Shepherd doesn't get music and requires explanatory lyrics, that's sad but OK.

What is not OK, especially from a music critic, is her active dislike of instrumental music, and her apparent inability to ever let it pass without disparaging schoolmarmish comment.
