Muddling along

How gratifying that the new boss of RBS has elected to
muddle along on £1 million a year – at least for the first year (your report, 3 August).

As a miner in the 1950s I received a bonus of one fifth of my daily rate for every shift I worked. When challenged by the head timekeeper for working only four days a week, thereby qualifying for four fifths of £1.6.2d, my daily rate, I replied that I could not get by on three shifts.
