Mouthpiece: A chance to show support

Armed Forces Day is an opportunity to pay tribute, says Sir David Richards

ON THE day that we come together in Edinburgh to honour the armed forces, past and present, it is worth reflecting on what is happening many miles away from Scotland, in Afghanistan.

I visited Helmand earlier this week where, alongside many others, soldiers from the Scots Guards and 1 SCOTS in Edinburgh are currently operating. Other units and individuals recruited in Scotland – from all three services – are preparing to deploy to Afghanistan.

The sacrifice in Afghanistan and the recent return of 3 RIFLES to Edinburgh, reminds us that the men and women in our armed forces accept an unlimited liability.

Despite the personal and family tragedy that every death and life-changing injury represents, we should not think of them as victims. Rather they are heroes, or victors, for stepping up to the mark fully understanding the dangers they will inevitably face. Their resolve to make a difference, to do their job to the best of their ability, and more than anything to look out for their comrades and friends is quite simply humbling.

We can be confident that they know their training is second to none, they have never been better equipped and their medical support is exceptional. They know that the risks they run are never unnecessary, but this does not explain why they are prepared to put their team and mission before their own needs. Soldiers are defined by selfless commitment, courage, discipline, integrity, loyalty and respect for others. These values sustain both the effectiveness and the reputation of the British armed forces.

Every soldier, full-time or part-time, serving or veteran, has volunteered to serve the nation and to do his or her duty. They do not expect the support of the country as a right, but if we as a nation are to sustain this and future necessary operations in an unstable world they, and indeed importantly their families, need to feel valued.

When that support is given, it is hugely appreciated.
