More questions

Several writers commented about the BBC’s Question Time last Thursday featuring a panel of referendum commentators facing an audience of 16- to 17-year-olds (Perspective, 
15 and 17 June).

The consensus was that it was a disgrace, but for quite disparate reasons.

The further point is that, as no-one raised the key issue – that these new voters would face, for their entire lives to come, the ever-increasing need for revenues to pay for welfare broadly, including education, health and pensions – the exercise was in the end futile.

The economics of the future following separation should have dominated the proceedings. All sides were let down by the BBC’s directed approach which totally neglected this key aspect.

It is surprising that The Scotsman writers missed this too.
