Moon memories

I was interested to read that Charlie Webster (Letters, 17 October) had heard that the cause of the blue moon in September 1950 was “forest fires in Canada”.

I was just five when my mother carried me from my bed that night to look at the moon from my window in the Borders. She told me I would never see such a thing again as it happened only “once in a blue moon”. A day or two later my father explained to me that the moon had been blue because of forest fires in Canada.
