Modern icons

In your caption to the picture of “Field of Light” in St
Andrew’s Square Gardens
(4 February), the gardens are
described as “one of Edinburgh’s iconic gardens”.

Recently, in your report on the proposed visitor centre at the Forth Bridge, the bridge was described as “iconic”.

This was a word seldom, if ever, used 30 years ago but it has become one of the most over-used words in the English-speaking world of the 21st century.

In fact, it’s fair to say that the word “iconic” has itself become iconic.
