MoD inconsistent
The Ministry of Defence’s acceptance of responsibility for the Tornado crash and the fact that the Military Aviation Authority has issued more than 50 recommendations (“RAF airman who was afraid to fly is cleared of blame for Tornado crash”, 2 July) makes a strange contrast with the crash of the RAF Chinook on the Mull of Kintyre in 1994 where 29
people died.
In the latter case, even though compensation has been paid to the families of all who died, even to those of the crew who were initially held responsible, the MoD has not admitted responsibility, nor have any recommendations been issued.
In fact, despite accepting Lord Philip’s flawed report and appearing to exonerate the pilots, the accident remains officially unexplained and (perhaps) inexplicable.
But how can pilot error be ruled out if the cause of the accident is unknown? Also, why does the MoD wash its hands of this case and not others?
