Missing words

Peter Jones (Perspective, 11 October) is totally correct in pointing out that the lack of information relating to both sides of the independence argument is stifling proper debate.

The lack of public debate in the lead-up to the referendum is astonishing, the exchange of abuse on the internet being no substitute whatsoever.

It is almost as if the politicians do not believe the citizens have any role to play other than voting when the time comes.

However, the onus lies with the SNP, the promoters of such profound constitutional change, to encourage a vigorous public debate.

I assume that the lack of such encouragement is based on a hope within the SNP that we will drift visionless and with a vague sense of grievance into independence.
