Missing million

In Any Questions on Radio 4, a question concerned whether England should have its own 
parliament.

As a preamble to her answer, Baroness Royall, leader of the 
opposition in the House of Lords, could not understand why Scotland would want to leave a strong UK, but confessed that she did not know how many million we were, “but not many million”.

The chairman, Jonathan Dimbleby, helpfully chipped in: “I think it’s about four.” The others on the panel, including Liam Fox, the former defence secretary, did not attempt any correction of this estimate.

So five prominent members of the UK establishment revealed that they have no firm idea of the Scottish population. The message is that they don’t want us to leave, but they don’t know what it is that might be leaving.

In fact, 25 per cent of us can just slip away, and they won’t notice.
