Medics alert

I attended an Imperial College London graduation ceremony where we clapped through some 700 medics receiving their post-graduate degrees. Of course, a goodly percentage would be returning to homes outwith the UK but most, probably not.

Given that this happy occasion will be repeated at several dozen universities across the UK, the thought occurred to me that with so very many medics – enough to fill the Royal Albert Hall – how come you can’t find one during evenings and weekends? How come there is supposed to be a shortage?

I asked two of the graduates about this and both said that “patients” were not an interest and they were looking for research posts. Has a medical degree just become an entry-
level qualification?
