Marching orders

Norman Bonney (Letters, 19 July) says Orange Order members have a right to express their beliefs. I agree, but not that they should be allowed to cause others inconvenience and/or offence by marching on public roads. No other group regularly does this. If many did then it would cause frequent disruptions and high public costs.

Expressing one’s beliefs to people who don’t ask to know them is discourteous and usually counterproductive. Having a right to do something does not oblige one to exercise it. If marchers were really “Christian” they would surely be doing more charitable things with their time.

Jesus said: “By their deeds you will know them.” Nowhere in the Bible is there an exhortation to believers to wave banners and bang drums.
