Make oil pay

For once, I agree with George Kerevan (Business, 31 January) when he says the big oil companies are perfectly well placed to deal with the fall in the oil price.

The day before, as Shell announced £19 billion yearly profits, their chief executive demanded tax cuts which the SNP Government backed.

I think that the oil industry should perhaps cut their extreme salaries and put away some more money in the good times rather than always demanding cuts in funding to schools and hospitals to pay for their failure to plan.

The fact that the SNP think corporation taxes should be cut for Apple, who made the greatest quarterly profits in the history of mankind, and oil taxes should be cut for Shell et al, makes me greatly concerned about how much income taxes and VAT would rise under independence.
