Maguire tribute

WHAT a pity Frank Maguire, the solicitor who fought for many Scottish victims of pleural plaques, did not live to see his efforts in this cause come to fruition (“Asbestos fibres are blamed for pleural plaques,” your report, 13 October). I was in the Scottish Parliament some years ago at a committee meeting and listened to Mr Maguire speak on the subject of workers whose health was damaged by unwittingly allowing themselves to be exposed to asbestos fibres that those in authority knew were deadly.

He spoke with authority on the subject of asbestos use in industry and with a conviction and passion that was obviously genuine.

Mr Maguire’s reward will be that those who remember him will see the Supreme Court’s decision as testimony to him and the Scottish Parliament, which – like me – was convinced by the sincerity and soundness of his arguments.
