Magic trick

The caption of the photograph of the head office of The Royal Bank of Scotland (your report, 12 March) advises us that the building is in Charlotte Square.

I wonder if Bruce Marshall’s Father Malachy has worked another miracle.

For readers not au fait with Marshall’s works, his 1931 novel tells of the priest looking, from the window of his quarters, at the dance hall across the road and praying that some miracle would occur to remove it, along with those iniquitous enough to attend such a place of sin.

His prayers were answered and the dance hall was transported to the Bass Rock.

Or it could be that Mark Carney, Governor of the Bank of England, has assumed that, as there is possibly more wealth in Charlotte Square than St Andrew Square, the bank’s head office should be located there.
