In these days when the Union is set to face its most severe test since a time that may actually pre-date the Old Firm’s dominance of Scottish domestic football, might it not be worth highlighting the anomalous status of Berwick-upon-Tweed?

If, hypothetically, the residents of this corner of Northumberland were asked the referendum question: “Should Berwick be part of a devolved Scotland?”, the answer would likely be a resounding Yes, especially if the alternative was to be left out on the periphery of a jettisoned England.

However, there would be very little appetite for becoming part of an independent Scotland.

For one thing, that would put an international frontier between the town and the home of its football team, Berwick Rangers, at Shielfield Park in Tweedmouth, on the English side of the river.
