Logo homage

Never let it be said that the arts community in Scotland misses a trick in reappropriating great art.

The Leith agency's 35,000 "new" logo for Creative Scotland bears more than a passing resemblance to early 20th-century Russian artist Kazamir Malevich's Black Square Black Circle (your report, 2 July).

In the early years after the Russian revolution, Malevich's use of simple geometric design was seen as iconic and literally a sign of the new times. Creative Scotland has either demonstrated a remarkable homage to the art of Communist revolution or the Leith Agency has cleverly mimicked the Commonwealth Games design agency in re-appropriating existing imagery.

A sign of the new times indeed.
