Little on Largs

I was disappointed to note in the media last week virtually no reference to the 750th anniversary of the Battle of Largs (2
October, 1263) which led to the cessation of all the Hebrides from Norway to Scotland after 260 years.

It seemed perverse that at Largs itself, with its annual Viking festival (in September) and permanent Vikingar exhibition there seemed to be no commemorative events on the day or during the week. The prominent Pencil monument, built in 1912 to commemorate Alexander III’s victory over Haakon of Norway’s shipwrecked army, seems to have lost its point.
