Arguably there is little, if any, significant social conduct that is “innate” as Dr Mary Brown supposes (Letters, 30 August). She refers to that shameful period when men engaging in same-sex relations were persecuted and often prosecuted. Not women because supposedly it seems Queen Victoria had refused to accept that lesbianism existed.

And how contrary of Dr Brown to argue bisexual conduct is not fatal to the theory of innate sexual orientation. Today to be openly gay, straight or both is because of a cultural shift in morality and the law.

Innate explanations of human conduct are deeply ideological because they deny what is uniquely human – the ability to choose.
