Letters: Scottish theatre

The letters from Dr Purves and Sophie L Anderson (15 February) revisit the struggle Scots had to recover from decades of indoctrination disguised as education – in that Scots were encouraged to despise their domestic speech and regard their indigenous literature as second-rate.

Burns, for all his world esteem, always took a back seat to the Bard of Avon and there was no Scots drama requiring the slightest notice. This despite respect shown towards Shakespeare and other non-Scots indigenous persons and works, and towards works within Scotland, by Scots, that were non-indigenous.

If the National Theatre of Scotland is to earn its name it must not be tardy in urging forward Scots productions.
