Letters: Political farce

Politics was always a good career choice for men of a certain class who would probably not achieve much in the real world, and occasionally it yields some strange results, such as our present Prime Minister and his deputy, for example, who both look and sound like a couple of used Rolls-Royce salesmen, plus a Foreign Secretary who can't organise a charter flight into North Africa without a week's notice.

Then we have a Defence Secretary who, if he continues to destroy our armed forces and their equipment, will soon be facing our enemies on his own, standing at the sharp end of some converted paddle steamer with his uncle's shotgun in his hand.

You couldn't make it up.

Where are the former Labour Party prime ministers Tony Blair (now peace envoy) and Gordon Brown now? Not so long ago for political reasons and commercial purposes they were both happy to cuddle Colonel Gaddafi in the Libyan desert.

They have now taken a back seat and done absolutely zilch to have our terrified Scots oil workers home safely. Shame on them both and their party.

The relatives of Britons working in Libya have been quick to condemn the government. I wonder how many of these families enjoy the free health, education and many other benefits of UK living while their main breadwinner pays no tax here.

The difference between being British enough to be rescued and working abroad enough not to pay tax here must be a subtle one.
