Letters: Cost of Sheridan probe is a small price to pay for justice

I FIND it hard to believe that, following the Tommy Sheridan court case, people are questioning the cost of bringing him to justice (News, December 24).

The law is what keeps our civilised society on an even keel, and no price should ever be put upon it.

Our legal system, which is admired by other countries around the world, is one of the things that sets us as a nation apart from other countries.

If we turn a blind eye to perjury, then we risk undermining the whole system, and justice itself would be under threat.

Therefore there was no other choice, as far as I am concerned, than to pursue the case against Mr Sheridan. One million pounds may seem like a large sum, but it is a small price to pay to keep justice intact.

Icy reception for politicians' work

UNTIL the recent thaw, East Craigs resembled a veritable bleak and barren waste land that Edinburgh City Council seemed to have completely forgotten about in terms of getting from point A to B.

The only way for any person on foot to do that would have been to use the public footpath system, which at the end of last week had not been treated in any way shape or form since the start of the severe and inclement weather some three to four weeks earlier.

Perhaps our councillors Jenny Dawe, Colin Keir and Robert Aldridge, the councillor with responsibility for the environment no less, who all are part of the current administration, might wish to explain why they have spectacularly failed to look after or address the interests of the people in their own ward?

The same might be asked about Mike Crockart MP and Margaret Smith MSP, who profess to look after our interests in this area.

However, I would doubt they would have ventured into East Craigs for fear of slipping (excuse the pun) even further in an ever growing number of local people's estimations.

'Mass of evidence' does not exist

AS is often the case with climate change deniers, Robert Dow merely restates misunderstandings and/or downright untruths (Interactive, December 24).

Quite simply, there is not a "mass of evidence" supporting climate change denial. There are not "thousands of reputable scientists" supporting this non-existent evidence. These claims have been rubbished time and time again, yet the deniers keep repeating them as if somehow repetition creates reality.

This is because repeating discredited evidence is all they have. Any serious research into climate change leads to the conclusion that not only is it happening, but also that humans have their hand in it. I would much prefer this not to be the case, but it is the unpleasant reality.

Eye op was the best present ever

I HAVE received the best gift I have ever had. I had a cataract operation at the Eye Pavilion.

The staff were all very kind, considerate, friendly and efficient.

On Christmas morning I rose, cleaned my eye and put the drops in. I then went to make breakfast. When I looked at my clock I realised that although I was not wearing my spectacles I could see the time clearly.

I would like to thank everyone at the Eye Pavilion and my friends Don and Evelyn who collected me despite the bad condition of our side roads.

Margaret Mavor, Craiglockhart View, EdinburghThanks for help in raising funds

I'D be very grateful if you pass on the thanks of SANDS Lothians gift wrappers to the shoppers at Ocean Terminal on December 22 who donated the fantastic sum of 481.88 to the charity in exchange for us taking some of the stress out of their Christmas shopping!

Do you think justice, like other areas, should not be immune to cutbacks in the current climate?
