Letters: 1966 and all that

Keith Halley (Point of View, 15 February) refers to the ongoing reminders by various commentators that England won the football World Cup in 1966.

Many Scots find this irritating, but what would our attitude be if we had achieved this feat? Would we not take pleasure in pointing this out to our neighbours at every opportunity?

After all, before every match Scotland plays, football or rugby, we sing in celebration of victory in a battle fought almost 700 years ago. At least 1966 is within living memory.

More than 40 years on and, if your correspondent Keith Halley is at all representative, Scottish resentment of a distant English footballing success is still fresh and bright. What a pity we English will never have the opportunity to harbour a grudge about a similar Scottish triumph.
