Letter: Wrong target

Radical welfare reform starts in Aberdeen and Burnley today, when incapacity claimants will be re-assessed to see if they are "fit for work". This is a very serious issue and raises some questions.

First, who is carrying out the re-assessment? Will it be private companies being paid by results? Second, what is the cost in real terms of re-assessing all claimants? Third, where are the jobs for those deemed fit for work?

Are this group being unfairly targeted by the coalition government as they try to cut the country's deficit, or can we expect high earners to be targeted in the same way, with re-assessment of their tax returns or an announcement of a fair system of progressive taxation in the spending review?

It was not the sick who brought the country to near bankruptcy.
