Letter: Working benefits

I can't even begin to describe how disappointed I was by some of the selfish opinions expressed about paternity leave (Letters and Webview, 18 January).

While I completely understand that small businesses will struggle while parents are away looking after their babies, I am appalled at people's refusal to look at the bigger picture.

Where do they expect the next generation to come from? Do they want a country in which only the long-term unemployed find themselves in a position to give birth and where the new generation of children have no experience of a work ethic?

Do they not see that being part of family life can enhance a person's (employee's) skills and overall usefulness?
