YOUR article about literacy (26 November) says the “claim that even in the spell-check era too many young people committed howlers when … going for jobs, was backed up by politicians and teachers…”

I would suggest spell-check could be the reason for the howlers. I have used spell-check. “I am extremely exited” was flagged as being “passive voice (consider revising)”. With “A hive gist pit this threw may spill cheque” it says “Spelling and grammar check is complete”. Sew their.
