Letter: Who's who?

Doctor Who on Saturday night had a familiar plot line and I wondered how many of my fellow Scots recognised it. It was war between the Lizards who lived in the bowels of the Earth and the Apes who inhabited the surface.

Although the Lizards chuntered on in Lizard dialect, they spoke the same language so we didn't have any difficulty following the story. The Lizards had skins of a green tartan and regarded the Apes as the auld enemy and they wanted Planet Earth for themselves. It's "Lizards' Oil", they declared.

Luckily, however, Doctor Who pointed out they could probably solve it all without killing each other. Brilliant, said that nice Karen Gillan from Inverness. And we could share the land and the oil. Yes, agreed the Chief Lizard. What a great idea. But it will take my people 1,000 years or so to warm to the idea. But they agreed to give the unionist idea a try and the episode had a happy ending. What a sensible idea, I thought. Maybe other people could try it.
